New Glyphs From Spell of Vanishing

Or, I Sketched Some Ideas For Spell Marks My Characters Use In The Dark Caster Series

Anchors represent salvation and hope.

The bridge, the X, the chalice, and the six-stringed harp create links between the physical and the spiritual worlds.

A six-pointed star is the symbol of the human soul.

The zodiac sign for Libra and the scales both symbolize cosmic justice.

A bell represents power.

The zodiac sign for Virgo is a balance of positive and negative forces.

The last two are my own creations:

The open-ended spiral is used in the overwhelming joy spell.

The variation on the Celtic cross is used to cast black magic.

These, and others, are used by the necromancers in the Dark Caster Series.

Or, What Happens When You Use Stock Photos For Your Cover

matching covers

During my recent book tour for Spell of Vanishing a reader pointed out the male model on the cover of Spell of Summoning is the same as on the cover of HP Mallory’s Sinjin. And then during the same tour I found an almost identical cover for Vanessa Waltz’s High Stakes as the Spell of Vanishing cover I paid a designer to put together for me.

Insert forehead smack.

But what’s an indie author to do? I can’t afford to photograph my own models or hire artists to create covers from scratch, so I have to use stock photos. Just like almost every other indie author. I suppose, with only a few stock photo sites, it’s inevitable that two authors will choose the same model or graphics. But it still stings when I see it happen.

Are you feeling my pain? lol

Holden Clark walks into Rebecca Powell’s life, a tall, blue-eyed stranger who stirs long forgotten desires. But nothing, including this man, is what it seems. A dark necromancer is targeting Becca for a full-blown demonic possession. She is thrust into a world she never knew existed—a world where dark casters create chaos and necromancers talk to the dead.

Holden has no faith in his power. A necromancer, he communicates with the dead, but he has never embraced his gifts. Now, he has no choice. He must stop the dark caster attacking Rebecca, but accepting this mission means he’ll be delving into dangerous magics he’s never used before.

Final NaNoWriMo Update

Final NaNoWriMo Update

Or, The End Is Finally In Sight!

Spell200x300

This year I’m writing the final novel in my Dark Caster series for National Novel Writing Month, and so far it’s going great. Maybe it’s that I’ve already written two other novels this year (Panacea and Spell of Vanishing) so I’m in the groove, but this year has been the easiest so far. I’m over 40K words and I haven’t even written the climax or resolution yet. I know I’m going to be able to finish the contest with no problems (barring emergencies–knock on wood).

I’m thrilled to get this final book finished and edited so I can share it with those of you who have been reading my Dark Caster series from the very beginning.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Mid-Month NaNoWriMo Update

Mid-Month NaNoWriMo Update

Or, My 1st 2 Weeks Of NaNo 2014

Current word count => 18,265.

I love November more than any other month. It’s the one month I get to wildly obsess about writing and be cheered for it. (I love my job!)

If you’ve ever thought of writing a novel, I encourage you to sketch out an idea next year and then take the NaNoWriMo challenge in 2015. You won’t regret it. Because even if you don’t meet the 50,000 words in 30 days goal, you will write much more than you would in a normal month.

Last year I wrote the final book in the Red Plague trilogy–Panacea.

This year I’m writing the final book in the Dark Caster series. (Title to be determined.) The cover below is from the first book in the series.

I work during the day and then am a mom and wife in the evenings. On top of that I write. What I learned right away is that I can’t procrastinate this month. Sometimes I wait to write until the time just “appears.” But that isn’t working right now. Not when I need a solid hour to complete 2000 words (my daily goal). With work, school, theater practice, violin lessons, dinner, etc., etc. I can’t squeeze in the time and go to sleep at a reasonable hour. So, I’m going to have to force myself to get up an hour early starting tomorrow morning, even though I’m not a morning person at all. But if I don’t get my word count in before I go to work I spend the entire day worrying about how to finish everything.

So, think of me bleary-eyed and pounding away on the keyboard tomorrow morning, slurping coffee by the quart as I try to do justice to Derek and Jessa’s story.

Thank goodness there’s December and National Editing Your Manuscript Month (If it doesn’t officially exist, it should!).

5 Star Review for Spell of Summoning

5 Star Review for Spell of Summoning

Or, A Great Review For The 1st Book In The Dark Caster Series

Spell200x300

Here is a great review of Spell of Summoning by 13th Floor author Christine Rains. You can see the original review here.

Holden Clark would rather hide out in his house with his dog and fix the place up than mingle with people. But his Grams, or rather, the ghost of his Grams, urges him to help Rebecca Powell who has a demon possession spell cast on her. He’s a necromancer with little experience, but he has to learn a heck of a lot to help Rebecca or she’ll lose her soul to the demon.

This is a great paranormal romance with a fresh take on necromancers. Necromancers do usually get a bad rep in the paranormal world, but in this book, they’re like any other magic user in that they can be good or bad. Some are born and some are made, but it’s a fascinating take on them. Holden is the perfect necromancer paladin too. Strong, moral, and handsome. He’ll do the right thing no matter what it takes.

Rebecca is the perfect complement to him. She’s feisty and independent. She has a successful career and is not in the business of being rescued by anyone. Though it is hard to resist sexy Holden!

While I guessed who was the evil necromancer, the joy was in the journey. A wonderful romantic plot that was sizzling and sweet along with excellent characterization.

I’ll definitely be picking up the next one in this series.

Thanks, Christine!
