Poor Maks had been through enough!<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Enjoy this alternate scene.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B07994YPP9\/?tag=annabnwor-20\" data-wplink-edit=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4104 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/annaabner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/BOV-2-ebook-200x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Can you sedate him?&#8221; Ali asked, staring worriedly down at the writhing Maks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already have,\u201d Julia said. \u201cHe burns through it too quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe I can try.\u201d Connor put one large hand over Volk\u2019s nose and mouth, pressing tightly.<\/p>\n<p>Immediately, Volk stiffened. Under Lukas\u2019s hold, his feet kicked helplessly and his hands flopped back and forth. His eyes bulged and turned pink as blood vessels popped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConnor\u2026,\u201d Ali warned in an unsteady voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe shouldn\u2019t have to suffer more pain,\u201d Connor said. He watched every second of Volk\u2019s struggle as if it were his penance for causing it.<\/p>\n<p>Volk gave a final, jerky spasm and then went limp.<\/p>\n<p>Connor whipped his hand off Volk\u2019s face and pressed his cheek to the other man\u2019s mouth and nose. \u201cHe\u2019s breathing,\u201d he said, suddenly out of breath himself. \u201cSorry, I need a minute. Keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lukas peeled his hands from Volk\u2019s body and stepped away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJesus,\u201d he swore. \u201cYou people really know how to party. Do you mind if I go throw up now? No? Good.\u201d He rushed out of the kitchen in the direction of the bathroom.<\/p>\n<p>Roz kept up a steady rhythm of healing spells, but her face flushed and her pulse was a galloping pony in her chest.
