Final NaNoWriMo Update

Final NaNoWriMo Update

Or, The End Is Finally In Sight!

Spell200x300

This year I’m writing the final novel in my Dark Caster series for National Novel Writing Month, and so far it’s going great. Maybe it’s that I’ve already written two other novels this year (Panacea and Spell of Vanishing) so I’m in the groove, but this year has been the easiest so far. I’m over 40K words and I haven’t even written the climax or resolution yet. I know I’m going to be able to finish the contest with no problems (barring emergencies–knock on wood).

I’m thrilled to get this final book finished and edited so I can share it with those of you who have been reading my Dark Caster series from the very beginning.

Happy Thanksgiving!

5 Star Review for Spell of Summoning

5 Star Review for Spell of Summoning

Or, A Great Review For The 1st Book In The Dark Caster Series

Spell200x300

Here is a great review of Spell of Summoning by 13th Floor author Christine Rains. You can see the original review here.

Holden Clark would rather hide out in his house with his dog and fix the place up than mingle with people. But his Grams, or rather, the ghost of his Grams, urges him to help Rebecca Powell who has a demon possession spell cast on her. He’s a necromancer with little experience, but he has to learn a heck of a lot to help Rebecca or she’ll lose her soul to the demon.

This is a great paranormal romance with a fresh take on necromancers. Necromancers do usually get a bad rep in the paranormal world, but in this book, they’re like any other magic user in that they can be good or bad. Some are born and some are made, but it’s a fascinating take on them. Holden is the perfect necromancer paladin too. Strong, moral, and handsome. He’ll do the right thing no matter what it takes.

Rebecca is the perfect complement to him. She’s feisty and independent. She has a successful career and is not in the business of being rescued by anyone. Though it is hard to resist sexy Holden!

While I guessed who was the evil necromancer, the joy was in the journey. A wonderful romantic plot that was sizzling and sweet along with excellent characterization.

I’ll definitely be picking up the next one in this series.

Thanks, Christine!

Are Audiobooks Worth The Effort?

Are Audiobooks Worth The Effort?

Or, Why I Decided to Create an Audiobook Version of Spell of Summoning

Converting my first novel in the Dark Caster Series into an audiobook made me more nervous and way more scared than publishing it in its current digital form. My inner pessimist went wild:

What if it sounds awful?

What if the voice actor sucks?

What if it doesn’t sell well and then I look like a loser to my producing partner?

I'm a bit of a worrier.
I’m a bit of a worrier.

Before I lost any more sleep, I logged onto iTunes and downloaded my first audiobook–Relentless Seduction–a paranormal romance by Jillian Burns. I listened to it in the car on my iPad, and I loved it! My new favorite thing to do on road trips is listening to audiobooks.

ACX.com, an Amazon company, is a user friendly one stop shop for uploading your novel and hiring a producer to create the audio version. The technical, contract style language made me a little hesitant to move forward, but I agreed to the site’s terms and opened Spell of Summoning as a new project. I could have waited for a producer to find me and offer to record my novel, but I’m impatient, so I listened to pre-recorded auditions. After some trial and error I decided I wanted a young woman with a general American accent and an engaging voice that I could happily listen to for hours on end.

I was lucky to find a talented young actress, Elizabeth Siedt, right away who agreed to produce the audiobook.

Unlike traditional “books on tape,” there were no upfront costs. Similar to publishing your digital book with Amazon, you and the producer receive a percentage of the sales in exchange for selling the audiobook exclusively at Audible.com, iTunes, and Amazon.com.

The answer to my initial question–Are audiobooks worth the effort?–is yes!

I loved Abner’s take on necromancer’s.  It was refreshing to see them portrayed as real people that have a choice to use their powers for good or evil, instead of just automatically being nasty people because of their powers.  Holden is a genuinely good guy with lots of baggage.  Baggage that he is forced to confront head on if he wants to save Becca from demonic possession.  She’s got a particularly nasty demon that is being summoned to take control of her.  Becca and Holden need to find a way to stop it and kill the necromancer controlling it before it’s too late.

Even though I had guessed the bad guy’s identity part way through, the story was written in a way that I kept second guessing myself all along the way.  With lots of action and a deep love between our two characters, it was a fantastic story that kept me very entertained until the very end.
