Or, An Update on Book Two in the Dark Caster Series

SB_200x300

Spell of Binding (Dark Caster Book Two) cover blurb:

Daniela Ferraro can’t touch people without hurting them. So when she wakes up in the Dark Caster’s cell next to the one man guaranteed to mess with her heart, she will risk anything to escape.

David Wilkes has no idea why he’s been abducted and thrown in a locked room with Dani, the woman who jilted him two years ago. But when the Dark Caster threatens David’s four year old son, David will not stop until Ryan is safe and the evil necromancers tormenting him are destroyed.

When Dani’s powers are bound and her necromancer friends are out of commission, the only way to protect the people she cares about and keep the Chaos Gate firmly closed is to trust in David.

But the closer Dani gets to David the more lethal her touch becomes for the only man she’s ever loved.

S.O.B. is with my editor now and I’m thrilled it will be ready for a July 2013 release! Afterwards I’m taking a six month break from the Dark Caster series to develop a young adult paranormal trilogy. But don’t worry! I will return to my necromancers in 2014 with book three–Cole’s story.

The idea that this local do-gooder was secretly a caster just didn’t click. But if there was a chance that David was a necromancer—even one very, very deep in the magical closet—Dani had to get him to power up. They needed every advantage they could muster.

Are Audiobooks Worth The Effort?

Are Audiobooks Worth The Effort?

Or, Why I Decided to Create an Audiobook Version of Spell of Summoning

Converting my first novel in the Dark Caster Series into an audiobook made me more nervous and way more scared than publishing it in its current digital form. My inner pessimist went wild:

What if it sounds awful?

What if the voice actor sucks?

What if it doesn’t sell well and then I look like a loser to my producing partner?

I'm a bit of a worrier.
I’m a bit of a worrier.

Before I lost any more sleep, I logged onto iTunes and downloaded my first audiobook–Relentless Seduction–a paranormal romance by Jillian Burns. I listened to it in the car on my iPad, and I loved it! My new favorite thing to do on road trips is listening to audiobooks.

ACX.com, an Amazon company, is a user friendly one stop shop for uploading your novel and hiring a producer to create the audio version. The technical, contract style language made me a little hesitant to move forward, but I agreed to the site’s terms and opened Spell of Summoning as a new project. I could have waited for a producer to find me and offer to record my novel, but I’m impatient, so I listened to pre-recorded auditions. After some trial and error I decided I wanted a young woman with a general American accent and an engaging voice that I could happily listen to for hours on end.

I was lucky to find a talented young actress, Elizabeth Siedt, right away who agreed to produce the audiobook.

Unlike traditional “books on tape,” there were no upfront costs. Similar to publishing your digital book with Amazon, you and the producer receive a percentage of the sales in exchange for selling the audiobook exclusively at Audible.com, iTunes, and Amazon.com.

The answer to my initial question–Are audiobooks worth the effort?–is yes!

3 out of 5 howls

I loved Abner’s take on necromancer’s.  It was refreshing to see them portrayed as real people that have a choice to use their powers for good or evil, instead of just automatically being nasty people because of their powers.  Holden is a genuinely good guy with lots of baggage.  Baggage that he is forced to confront head on if he wants to save Becca from demonic possession.  She’s got a particularly nasty demon that is being summoned to take control of her.  Becca and Holden need to find a way to stop it and kill the necromancer controlling it before it’s too late.

Even though I had guessed the bad guy’s identity part way through, the story was written in a way that I kept second guessing myself all along the way.  With lots of action and a deep love between our two characters, it was a fantastic story that kept me very entertained until the very end.

Dani shrank from David’s touch. “I’m not sure what’s going on. I woke up a few minutes before you did.”

Her rejection cleared his head like nothing else could have. For a moment he’d forgotten how cold she was. “You’re not sure.” He tried to shake off her obvious revulsion. As if she hadn’t made her feelings clear a year ago. “But you have an idea?”

ABOUT THE BOOK

Holden Clark walks into Rebecca Powell’s life, a tall, blue-eyed stranger who stirs long forgotten desires. But nothing, including this man, is what it seems. A dark necromancer is targeting Becca for a full-blown demonic possession. She is thrust into a world she never knew existed—a world where dark casters create chaos and necromancers talk to the dead.

Holden has no faith in his power. A necromancer, he communicates with the dead, but he has never embraced his gifts. Now, he has no choice but to stop the dark caster attacking Rebecca, but accepting this mission means he’ll be delving into dangerous magics he’s never used before.

Under the protection of the damaged and mysterious Holden, Rebecca will question everything …

Review:  Spell of Summoning is an interesting read of magic and necromancy. While I am a fan of paranormal genres, I have never heard of necromancy. When I first read the mention of it, I had a feeling I was reading out of my comfort zone. Despite that I found myself enjoying the book immensely and intrigued with the whole necromancy stuff. While I am used to reading about spells, spell weaving, shape shifting and magical healing; necromancy entails spell circles, cutting yourself and calling on spirits to help and draw energy from.

Spell of Summoning is about Necromancer, Holden Clark and Real Estate realtor, Rebecca Powell. The gist of the story is Rebecca has a demon trying to take over her and it is slowly but surely wearing down her defenses. The story is a race against time to rid Rebecca of the demon before the people responsible finish the spell. Of course this becomes an adventure but this adventure also helps both Holden and Rebecca face their inner demons and open their eyes to their trues wants in life. I do like how the chemistry between Holden and Rebecca builds slowly and that their lovemaking scene is very explosive. Though there are times I did feel like their chemistry fell a little flat at times.

This book kept me at the edge of my seat, guessing who the culprit who is trying to destroy Rebecca and unleash a scary demon out into the world. I liked how this story was a perfect balance between a plot that drags on and a fast- faced plot. I appreciated this very much. Out of five stars I would rate this a 4 for the reason that the plot, necromancy, and passion were spot on with me but with the background story of both Rebecca and Holden along with the twists and turns of the story; I felt sorry for them more than half the time.

Spell Marks & Spell Circles

Spell Marks & Spell Circles

Or, My Interpretation of a Necromancer’s Spell

In the Dark Caster Series, I write about necromancers. In my world, they channel a spirit’s power with a lot of self control and the help of a spell circle. Most of my research came from the book A Dictionary of Symbols by JE Cirlot (1971). Here are a few of my own–very amateurish–drawings of what I imagined in my head while writing Spell of Summoning:

A symbol of power that hangs suspended between heaven and earth.
Bell; a symbol of power that hangs suspended between heaven and earth.
A bridge between worlds and a link between what can be perceived and what is beyond perception.

The lower part becomes a receptacle open to spiritual forces while the upper part closes over the earth.
Chalice: the lower part becomes a receptacle open to spiritual forces while the upper part closes over the earth.
Libra, a sign of equilibrium between good and evil; justice.

The mystic symbol for justice.
Scales; the mystic symbol for justice.
A link between the upper and lower worlds; inversion.
X; a link between the upper and lower worlds; inversion.
A six pointed star is the symbol of the human soul.

“How old are you?” David blurted out.

“I’ll be fifteen in a month,” Emi said, narrowing her eyes at him. “So, what did you find?”

“Okay.” Truth time.  David inhaled deeply and then dove in and swam. “I’m a necromancer. I communicate with spirits. Ghosts,” he clarified. “And I have been hanging out—No that sounds stupid. I’ve been talking to your brother quite a bit. He’s been helping me with some spells. But what he really wants to do is talk to you.”

Emi rolled her large, expressive eyes. “Nice try, but my mom is the one you want. She’ll write a check to anyone who says they can talk to Tony.”

The Music I Write By

The Music I Write By

Or, A Short Playlist For The Dark Caster Series

My all time favorite song “A Drop in the Ocean” by Ron Pope:

“Drunk on You” by Luke Bryan

“Skinny Love” by Bon Iver

A piano cover of “A Thousand Years” (originally by Christina Perri) by Nef Pagtakhan

The one song I think encompasses Holden Clark is “The Right Way” by Ron Pope, but I couldn’t share it. If you’ve never heard it, check it out. Every time he sings “I just want to live” it gives me goosebumps.
